Our Dochtórka – Mrs Maria Lewicka

doctor of medicine

On Thursday 19.01.2006, in the morning hours in Wrocław, after great suffering, Maria Lewicka, née Firkowska, doctor of medicine, died. Buried on 23.01.2006.

The health service always had little money, but the Doctor knew how to mobilise the residents to renovate the health centre in Winów. They did it as voluntary community work. “Warm thanks” are due to everyone who took part in this work.

1957 – graduate of the Medical Academy in Wrocław.

1.02.1960. I learned this date from the Doctor during one of my many visits. When I realised what year it was, I saw that for over 45 years she had been connected with us literally in matters of life and death. She did not save anyone from death, but how many of our residents she allowed to stay longer in this world, we will not hold against her. I personally owe her a great deal.

During the flood of 1997 I kept a diary of events. Under the date 19.07.1997 I wrote, among other things: “Dr Lewicka is here, instructing the residents how to protect themselves from an epidemic of typhus, typhoid fever and salmonella, because there is a great danger of poisoning from the standing flood water.”
