The chapel of 1664 in Folwark

In the years 1526–1740 the inhabitants of Folwark were subjects of the Emperor of Austria. It was a time generally regarded as peaceful, almost 200 years of peace. A time in which Protestantism also took hold of our region, until then almost entirely Catholic. In 1618 a war began that lasted 30 years, until 1648, and ended with the “Westphalian” peace. It was fought mainly by Catholic countries against Protestant ones. Silesia – the villages Catholic, the towns mostly Protestant, and the whole ruled by the Habsburgs – Catholics. The Protestants in the “Thirty Years’ War” were also helped by Swedish troops, and in the area around Folwark …..

Chronicle – Kwartalnik Opolski (Opole Quarterly) – we read: After the occupation of Opole by the Swedes in 1642, the excesses of the soldiers in its surroundings grew so strong that the peasants of Wójtowa Wieś, Górki, Szczepanowice and Folwark and others saw no other way out than to flee with their belongings and hide in the forests. … 1643 The imperial troops drove out the Swedish garrisons. The Silesian population did not know whom to wish success. The Swedes, “liberators” of the Protestants, the imperial troops, “defenders of the country” – “defenders of the Catholics”, plundered alike, regardless of religion. At the news of an approaching army, the people fled into the forests.

16 years after this terrible war the inhabitants of Folwark build this chapel. The Pope at that time was Alexander VII (1655–1667), number 237 after St. Peter.
